Career Resources Snapshot
Prior to 2008, the Society worked with the American Academy of Religion to offer career development and job listing and interview resources known as Employment Information Services.  Employers were able to list job openings online for member access, and members were able to register to display their Curriculum Vitae and interview with employers.  SBL and AAR continued similar services separately as of 2008 after AAR’s decision to hold its meeting independently from SBL.

Beginning in 2011, SBL and AAR will again hold their Annual Meetings concurrently, and there will be one jointly sponsored Employment Center at the Annual Meetings.  The Center will include all of the services AAR and SBL have offered independently for the past three years, including the ability to list jobs online and to display candidate credentials and register for interviews.  Plans are underway to create a single job-listing site, which will be managed jointly by SBL and AAR.

Tools and Advocacy
SBL strives to provide the most applicable professional development resources to its members.

Growing Concerns with the increase of Contingent Faculty Positions

SBL continues to work actively with the Coalition on the Academic Workforce (CAW). Given the fact that most of the academic workforce is employed in full and part-time contingent positions, all faculty need to pay close attention to what is happening in their own institutions. The recent American Association of University Professors newsletter addresses this matter. See also the "Research and Reports" tab on the Coalition's website for in-depth articles on the history, problems, and details surrounding this important segment of our field.

The Society advocates for all scholars through a variety of relationships with other national organizations. Find out more about advocacy efforts for scholars.

By listing jobs with SBL, contributing professional development resources, informing members of organization activities, or collaborating on diverse initiatives, these organizations are shaping a broad and useful axis for the field.
